The summary

Salary figures for Nigeria often circulate without a source, a date or a sample size, and a single “average salary” hides the gap between a cashier in Kano and a software engineer in Lagos. We would rather publish nothing than add to that. This page explains what our salary benchmarks report will contain and how we will build it.

This report is in preparation

No salary figures from this research have been published yet. The figures on this page are legal floors and tax rules from named sources, not survey results.

What the report will measure

The report will show pay as ranges, not single averages:

DimensionWhat it means
RoleCommon job families such as finance, HR, sales, customer service, operations and technology
LevelEntry, experienced, supervisory and management
SectorFor example financial services, manufacturing, retail, technology and professional services
LocationLagos, Abuja and other major cities, and the rest of the country
Pay elementsGross monthly pay, the share paid as basic salary, and common allowances

For each combination with enough responses, it will show the lower quartile, median and upper quartile, so you can see the spread as well as the middle.

How the data will be collected

Method for the first edition

  1. Collect

Gather pay data for named roles from employers, with consent, using a standard form.

  2. Clean

Remove duplicates and incomplete records, and convert all pay to monthly gross naira.

  3. Check

Compare outliers with the source, and test results against the national minimum wage.

  4. Publish only what holds up

Show a figure only where there are enough responses to protect confidentiality and be meaningful.

  5. Date everything

State the collection period, sample size and method alongside every table.

We will publish the method in full with the first edition, including what we left out and why.

What you can rely on today

Until the report is published, base pay decisions on figures you can trace:

  • The legal floor. The national minimum wage is ₦70,000 a month. See minimum wage in Nigeria.
  • Take-home pay. Use the PAYE calculator to see what any gross salary means after PAYE and pension under the 2026 rules.
  • Your own structure. Our guide to building a salary structure shows how to set grades and ranges from the data you have.
  • Named surveys. If you use a salary survey, record who produced it, when, and how many organisations took part.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to what employers ask us most about this topic.

What is the average monthly salary in Nigeria?

We have not yet published our own figure, because we will only do so from data we can describe and check. A single national average also hides very large differences by sector, role and state. When the report is ready it will show ranges by role and location.

What is the minimum monthly salary in Nigeria?

The national minimum wage is ₦70,000 a month, under the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024, from 29 July 2024.

When will the report be published?
