Best HR software in Nigeria: how to compare products honestly

A fair way to compare HR software in Nigeria: the modules that matter, the local requirements global tools can miss, a weighted scorecard you can copy, and the questions that expose weak products.

Best HR software in Nigeria: how to compare products honestly

Key takeaways

  • There is no single best HR software. The right product fits your headcount, locations, pay structure and the people who will use it every day.
  • Local fit matters most in payroll, leave and statutory records: PAYE under the 2026 rules, pension, NHF, NSITF and Labour Act leave.
  • Score every product against the same weighted criteria and the same real scenarios, rather than comparing demos.
  • We make Workstat, so treat this page as a method, and test our product against it like any other.

Search for the best HR software in Nigeria and you will find lists, many written by vendors about themselves. This page is different in one way only: it gives you a method to compare products, including ours, on the things that matter to a Nigerian employer. Workstat makes HR, payroll and attendance software, so read it with that in mind and hold us to the same test.

Start with the jobs, not the features

Every HR product has a long feature list. Few employers use more than a third of it. Before you look at any product, write down the five or six jobs HR does every month that take the most time or cause the most errors. For most Nigerian SMEs the list looks like this:

  1. Keeping employee records, contracts and documents in one place.
  2. Running payroll and statutory deductions correctly.
  3. Approving leave and keeping balances right.
  4. Tracking attendance, lateness and overtime.
  5. Running appraisals once or twice a year.
  6. Answering staff questions about pay, leave and policies.

Your list becomes the core of your scorecard.

The local requirements that separate products

Most HR software handles records and documents well. Differences show up where Nigerian law and practice come in.

Payroll and statutory deductions

Payroll must apply PAYE under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, the minimum pension contributions of 8% and 10%, NHF at 2.5% of basic, NSITF at 1% of payroll, and the annual employer return. Our payroll software guide covers these in depth. If a product does not run payroll itself, check how cleanly it passes data to the system that does.

Leave rules

Leave modules should let you set your own policy while respecting the Labour Act minimums: at least six working days of paid annual leave after 12 months’ continuous service, up to 12 working days of paid sick leave a year with a medical certificate, and 12 weeks of maternity leave. See our guides to annual leave, sick leave and maternity leave.

Public holidays

Nigeria’s Islamic holidays move each year and are confirmed by the Federal Government close to the date. The system should let HR add or move a holiday quickly so leave and pay calculations stay right. Our public holidays page tracks the declared dates.

Data protection

HR systems hold health information from sick notes and, with biometric attendance, data used to identify people. Both are sensitive personal data under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023. Ask where data is hosted, how access is controlled and logged, and what the vendor’s data processing agreement says.

Support and payments

Ask who answers support calls during payroll week, in which time zone, and how fast. Check that salaries and remittances can be paid in naira through the banks and channels you already use.

A weighted scorecard you can copy

Score each shortlisted product from 1 to 5 on each line, multiply by the weight, and add up. Change the weights to match your priorities, but agree them before you see any demo, so the scores are not bent to fit a favourite.

Types of product you will meet

Nigerian and African HR suites. Built around local payroll, statutory deductions and leave rules, often with payroll at the centre. Workstat is one of these, alongside other vendors selling to Nigerian employers. Check each one’s current features on its own website and in a demo.

Global HR platforms. Often strong on core HR, performance and employee experience. Check Nigerian payroll support carefully. Some connect to a separate local payroll provider.

Payroll-only tools. Good if payroll is the main pain and records live elsewhere. You may outgrow them when leave and attendance need to feed pay.

ERP modules. HR modules inside accounting or ERP systems suit larger groups already on that ERP, but setup and changes usually need specialist help.

How to run the shortlist

From long list to decision in four weeks

  1. Week 1: requirements

Write the jobs list, agree the scorecard weights and gather a month of anonymised data

  2. Week 2: first demos

Three vendors, the same script, scored independently by HR and finance

  3. Week 3: hands-on trial

The top two run your real scenarios: a payroll month, a leave request, a leaver

  4. Week 4: references and terms

Call two customers of a similar size, then compare contracts, data terms and total cost

Ask references specific questions: how long implementation really took, how support behaved during their first payroll, and what they would do differently.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to what employers ask us most about this topic.

What is the best HR software in Nigeria?

It depends on what you need it to do. A 30-person company that mainly needs payroll and leave has different needs from a 2,000-person group with several entities. Use a weighted scorecard, shortlist three products, and test each one with your own data and scenarios.

How much does HR software cost in Nigeria?

Most products charge per employee per month, often with a minimum fee, and some charge for setup, training or extra modules. Ask for the total cost for your headcount over two years, including implementation and support, so quotes can be compared.

Should we choose a global HR tool or a local one?

Global tools are often strong on core HR and performance. Check how they handle Nigerian payroll, statutory deductions, naira payments and local support before you commit. Some employers run a global HR tool alongside local payroll; others prefer one local system for everything.
